Born in Cape Town and educated at Queen’s College in Queenstown, his medical journey took him from general practice in Kokstad to Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where he dedicated himself to paediatric care for the majority of his illustrious career.
John was not only a medical professional but a visionary in the field of sports. He played a pivotal role in shaping the medical landscape of marathons, particularly the Comrades Marathon. His commitment to athletes’ well-being led to the creation of world-class medical facilities at these events, setting new standards in athlete care.
Beyond medicine and sports, John was a talented artist. As a member of the Midlands Art Group, he showcased his work at prestigious venues like the Tatham Art Gallery. His creative spirit found expression in both his medical and artistic endeavours.
Dr. Godlonton’s legacy transcends boundaries, touching the lives of many. From his patients at Edendale Hospital to marathon runners and the Midlands art community, his impact resonates through time.
