Sabs Abdool-Gaffar
SPECIALIST PHYSICIAN & PULMONOLOGIST | PHOTOGRAPHER
Sabs Abdool-Gaffar is a Specialist Physician and Pulmonologist practising at Netcare Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal. His clinical work centres on patients with respiratory disease and those who need critical-care support in the Intensive Care Unit, where he has spent decades reading the fine line between breath and stillness.
Beyond the ward, Sabs has given generously of his time to the South African Thoracic Society, holding a number of leadership positions including its Presidency, and helping to author the treatment guidelines that South African clinicians reach for when managing complex respiratory disease.
Photography sits alongside medicine as the other great discipline of his life. He is drawn to the candid frame, moments observed rather than arranged, and the camera has become both witness and companion, a therapeutic counter-weight to the intensity of clinical practice. Where medicine demands precision, photography offers freedom; where the ICU insists on control, the lens rewards attentiveness and surrender.
For Sabs, photography sharpens observation, invites introspection and gives shape to feeling. Each image is a small act of expression, a window onto the world as he sees it, framed by the same careful eye that reads a chest film or listens to a laboured breath.
He believes that finding beauty through the lens is, quite simply, a form of healing. It restores what long clinical days can quietly deplete, and it reminds him, and those who view his work, that observation itself, done with care, is an act of compassion.
