We honour and learn from those who have gone before us by preserving their work, reflecting on their vision, and sharing their artistic legacy with new audiences. This space is dedicated to artists whose contribution endures beyond their lifetime.
Dr. Peter Breedt (1956–2021)
Dr. Peter Breedt was a visionary who seamlessly blended the worlds of medicine and art. In 2007, he initiated and coordinated the first KwaZulu-Natal Doctors in Art Exhibition at Hillcrest Private Hospital, bringing together medical professionals who shared a passion for creative expression. Over the years, the exhibition grew into an annual celebration, with proceeds generously donated to Focus on iThemba. Tragically, Dr. Breedt’s life was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, but his legacy lives on through his daughter Gabi, who continues to pursue both medicine and the artistic spirit he instilled in her.
Dr. John D’Urban Godlonton (1938–2015)
Dr. John Godlonton profoundly impacted the worlds of medicine, art, and sport. From his paediatric work at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg to his pivotal role in shaping medical facilities for the Comrades Marathon, he set new standards in care. A talented artist and member of the Midlands Art Group, he exhibited at the Tatham Art Gallery and was known equally for his humour and his memorable on-stage ballet performances. He leaves behind his wife Mary, four children, grandchildren, and a legacy dedicated to healing and creativity.
