In Memory of Dr. Peter Breedt (1956–2021)
Bridging Medicine and Art
Dr. Peter Breedt was more than a remarkable medical professional — he was a visionary who seamlessly blended the worlds of medicine and art. In 2007, he embarked on a transformative journey by initiating and coordinating the first KwaZulu-Natal Doctors in Art Exhibition. This groundbreaking event brought together a group of about eight artists, all of whom shared the medical profession.
Over the years, the Doctors in Art Exhibition evolved into an annual celebration of artistic talent within the medical field. The list of participating artists grew steadily, encompassing a diverse array of medical disciplines, including general practitioners, specialists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, and nurses. These medical professionals unveiled their creative sides as painters, sculptors, and photographers, hailing from various regions, from the Highway and greater Durban area to Pietermaritzburg and even as far inland as Hilton.
Dr. Breedt’s vision didn’t just inspire artists within the medical community — it also touched the lives of those who experienced the exhibitions. The public was invited to explore the artistic treasures in the main foyer of Hillcrest Private Hospital during these exhibitions. Notably, a portion of the proceeds from artwork sales was generously donated to Focus on iThemba, a local charity organisation in Hillcrest.
Dr. Breedt’s passion for healing extended to his daughter, Gabi Breedt, who followed in her father’s footsteps into the medical profession. Completing her undergraduate studies in Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Gabi’s path eventually led her back home, working alongside her father.
In the medical world, Peter Breedt was not only a father but also a mentor, leaving an indelible mark on Gabi. His dedication to medicine, his ability to make a difference in people’s lives, and his compassionate approach to healing were truly inspiring.
Tragically, Dr. Peter Breedt’s life was cut short by the devastating Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, leaving a void in both the medical and artistic communities. However, his legacy lives on through his daughter Gabi. Inspired by her father’s memory, she continues to pursue her calling in medicine and carries forward the artistic spirit he instilled in her.
